This wonderful breed entered my life while I was showing hunter/jumpers. Pembroke Corgis were a popular stable dog. Although in retrospect, those Corgis were not great examples of the breed, I thought they were delightful so we quickly had a Corgi family of 3 soon after college graduation. My husband, Doug, and I have been immersed in the Corgi show world ever since.
I finished my first AKC Champion in 1986 and bred my first litter in 1987. That litter contained my first homebred Champion, AKC Ch. Bramblyhedge Alyssum. She won large classes at both the National & Lakeshore Specialties & hooked me for good on showing.
1987 turned out to be a pivotal year in the breed for me. As show chairperson for the Lakeshore Club, I met one of my best friends & mentors in this breed, Allan Taylor of Belroyd Corgis. He and Idris Jones have, in my opinion, produced some of the most beautiful Pembroke's ever bred. I’m so grateful to them for schooling me & also parting with some wonderful dogs. One of those, Belroyd Umbretta, (“Bluebelle”), was one of the dearest dogs I’ve ever owned & she produced “Geena”, AKC Ch. Bramblyhedge Bewitched. Geena was WB at the 1994 PWCCA National Specialty over an entry of almost 250 class bitches! She was also Best in Sweeps, Best Puppy and Reserve Winners Bitch at Lakeshore that same year. Shown only 6 times, she completed her AKC championship by winning the Herding Group at Waukesha K.C, over a group entry of 700+ dogs.
Geena’s sire was AKC Ch. Renefield Sport Coat, ROM. “Bugs” was a son of the fabulous bitch, AKC Ch. Renefield Bunny Quite Funny - produced by Carol Asteris and Linda Canfield of Renefield, whose impressive breeding/exhibiting career influenced me tremendously. Along with Sue and Jay Vahaly of Pennington I was in very good hands during my formative years in the breeds. AKC Ch. Pennington Double Glory, “Sean” had an wonderful show career including WD at PWCC of So California in 1995. He went back to the great AKC Ch. Pennington Gloriand through her equally lovely daughter, AKC Ch. Pennington Glory Hallelujah, ROM. I was so fortunate!
When I breed a litter, which is fairly infrequently, I ensure all pertinent health checks on the parents and the puppies, including OFA hip and CERF eye exams.
Judging has enhanced my enjoyment of this breed & I’ve done sweepstakes & matches for Corgi Specialty Clubs in Canada, New England, Oregon, Florida as well as Lakeshore. I’ve even been so honored to judge the 2007 South Wales KC Open Show. I really do look forward to the challenge & learning experiences that only judging provides.
